Do you think you could jolly up that line for me? It's a shame that, in our collective desperation to treat Christmas as a Coca-Cola commercial, we've ended up with a pale imitation of a beautiful and emotionally nuanced song. Martin's original might have been too bleak for a blockbuster, but the lyrics that Garland had for her final verse in Meet Me in St.
Louis hinted at the real anxiety and trepidation of midwinter, that sense of trying to hold things together in spite of everything. There's no good artistic reason to censor that. And it's not just hyper-commercial remakes that pull the line. Even the covers that I've grown to love, like Cat Power's whisper-quiet version from , go with the Sinatrafied stand-in lyrics. I'm not sure that anyone can ever fully reduce "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" to emotional neutrality.
Martin's melody is too blue and too beautiful, the sudden reach into a minor key too mournful, to be broken by some disposable lyric. As long as the chords remain the same and Garland's version is still around for reference, it'll still be sad and complex. The ghost of that line will always be there. I just couldn't get into this book.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" Is Bleaker Than You Think
It was a slow read, yet a joyful and worthy one. It took me a week to peruse the book, but I can assure you that I loved every moment of it. This is indubitably an amazing story, not really festive, though; and it didn't matter at all, for the story had managed to tick all the right boxes in other respects. It tells the story of three adult moms, who are striving to hit a balance between their momlife, marriage and career. Each of them had already a lot on their plates, they were trying to cope with the troubles, but the matters only got worsened each time than they expected. Pippa's attention is divided between her daughter, who needs special care, and her husband, who has met with an unfortunate accident.
Tinsall is struggling with her ill mom and teen daughter, wherein at Marianne's home, troubles are being stirred up by husband's ex. It's just an outline of the story. The story starts off just after a Christmas and it continues till the next one. This book is an elaborate account of three mothers' day-to-day life.
As you can imagine, their life definitely wasn't rosy. Even though they all had their shares of happiness, it was all overshadowed by the small and big worries largely. The slow-paced writing might appeal tedious, however, it got me really invested in the story instead. I reckon, knowing people having a real hard time in real life is what compelled me to read it.
I could very well fathom the characters, the situations they were in and it helped to make this reading a memorable one. Julia has nicely captured different shades and sides of a woman in this book. She is seen as a daughter, wife, mother, friend, cousin, sister and a worker. We see them smiling, happy, sad, fretting, crying, enjoying, having fun, shattered, beaten and even defeated.
There is so much going on in their life, but I can't mention them here, as it would be like it writing spoilers. This book has a very realistic, unpredictable and a hopeful ending. Julia finishes this sad and affectionate story in a cheerful way; which is really commendable.
There was also a character who seemed to play the role of an angel, he pops up whenever the main characters are shaken and offer helpful and encouraging thoughts. Albeit it was a minor character, I really liked the idea. I would encourage all of you to read this book; however, I assume that not everyone would be able to enjoy it well. So, I recommend it if you are a mom or wife, who is having a bad time. This story will tell you that whatever trouble you're going through lasts only for a while and then it will be gone.
The characters will encourage you to be optimistic; they will also teach you that not everything can be mended and you got to be patient. They will remind you that you need to either move on in life or try to embrace the changes. I loved this book and can't wait to read an another book by Julia Williams now. A Merry Little Christmas by Julia Williams has to get top marks from me for the traditional festive cover, a snow covered setting with a family singing carols around the tree and yes a nice sprinkling of glitter in the title, oooooooo I am looking forward to this one!

I adored all the storylines surrounding each of the characters and the author manages to bring all the characters together so that their stories come together and each of the characters support each other which shows the solidarity of the friendship between Pippa, Marianne and Kat.
The relationship between these characters seemed so natural. Julia Williams does bring us a little festive read but she also managed to bring a tear to my eye on a couple occasions but particularly on page so be aware. This is one of my favourite Christmas books this year and one I highly recommend I may even treat myself to Last Christmas if I have pennies left at the end of the month just to meet the characters again!

This story just tells the reader how challenging and difficult life can be for people in this generation while relating to the recession and cuts by the National Sunshine Trust a rehabilitation facility for those with Special Needs. It was very easy to keep up to date with the characters in the story as the majority of them are very close friends or relatives.
There is a real true meaning of friendship and family seen in this book and everybody works together to support one another. Everyone is there for each other no matter what the situation. One of the reason I think I connected with this book so much was because I either know people who have struggled in scenarios that are very similar to those in the book.
I only had one disappointment towards the end but there is always a silver lining! I would definitely recommend this book to all readers! Julia Williams a fantastic read Oct 24, Carol W rated it really liked it. I was really looking forward to getting into another Julia Williams novel after enjoying The Summer Season earlier this year. This one did not disappoint. Unexpectedly, the story does not begin as the families are preparing for Christmas, but at the beginning of the year.
We follow the four families throughout the year and over the festive period. My only little niggle was that at the beginning of the novel I felt overwhelmed with getting to know the four families so quickly.
