About this product Product Information Dusty in Memphis, Dusty Springfield's beautiful and bizarre magnum opus, remains as fine a hybrid of pop and rhythm and blues as has ever been made. In this remarkable book, Warren Zanes explores his own love affair with the record.

He digs deep into the album's Memphis roots and talks to several of the key characters who were involved in its creation; many of whom were - like Zanes - outsiders drawn to the American South and mesmerized by its hold over the imagination. EXCERPTThe love that is the subject of 'Dusty in Memphis' is different from the love of her earlier songs: it is a love that is all at once diffuse, dark, unpredictable, ecstatic, and a terrible deal.

It is a love too big for the lyrical and for that matter musical framework of Dusty's earlier pop productions, no matter the breadth of that work. Like Memphis itself, the love that is the subject of 'Dusty in Memphis' is indeed bursting with the contrary: it happens not simply when you yearn for it, as in some adolescent dream, but when you're not prepared for it; it reveals itself not simply under the star-filled skies where a moon hangs low--in fact, as the first and last tracks on side one attest, it might be at its best when the sun's just arriving at work.

The author, Warren Zanes, puts it best when he says that there is a "vulnerability we hear in her voice, it seems, [that] is not some fluke but the sound that pain makes when it comes out of a certain body.

‎Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis (33 1/3 Series) (Unabridged) on Apple Books

This album, however, is anything but a disappointment. The album was re-released in for its 30 year anniversary , and this is when I stumbled upon it. I fell in love with her then, this CD too stuck on repeat for a while. The first time around, I fell in love with her voice, the band, and the production. What I was struck by coming back to it was the songwriting. Each song is solid and soul-packed. The Windmills Of Your Mind is a track that stands out from the others, for its psychedelic leanings. I love all of the musical embellishments that change through each verse especially that Spanish guitar.

Dusty doesn't write a single track--but she embodies each song as if they were fragments of her life. Reading a little about her, you learn that she had a troubled life battling with insecurities and addiction. It seems that vulnerability in her voice is hard-won. Her sensuality, threaded through almost every raspy line, reflects her sexuality. I mean, people say that I'm gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay. I'm not anything. I'm just People are people I basically want to be straight I go from men to women; I don't give a shit. The catchphrase is: I can't love a man.

Now, that's my hang-up.
