Think chicken tacos or teriyaki chicken noodle bowls instead. I also love all the complimentary apres action designed for families -- street performers in the village, giant checkers and chess games with kid-sized huge pieces and even a Bavarian-themed fondue restaurant with a live polka band and the chance to do the Chicken Dance. There's also Camp Keystone, which gives children the chance to improve their skiing and the resort offers any child booking three or more days the guarantee of the same instructor each day.
At the end of day, parents have the chance to join a Mom, Dad and Me private lesson, alongside their child's instructor. But what I like best about Keystone is that not only is there plenty of terrain for all levels, but there is plenty to do besides downhill ski -- there are two ice-skating rinks, cross-country skiing at the Nordic Center with 5. One blue-sky day last season, while my daughter and nephew explored the mountain on skis and snowboard, we opted for a top-of-the-mountain snowshoe tour that took us 3 miles into the Bergman Bowl.
We certainly felt the altitude as we climbed from 11, feet to 11, feet. But the view of the mountain ranges is spectacular, as were the snow-covered trees and even the slopes above the tree line. A nice alternative to downhill skiing, we think, and the scenery couldn't be better. We only see a few skiers and riders hiking into terrain that has only had enough snow to open in the last week. We ended our day with drinks and snacks at the historic Ski Tip Lodge, the home of the first owners of Keystone, Edna and Max Dercum, and before that a stop on the stagecoach route.
Now it's a bed and breakfast famous for its multi-course dinners think caramelized fennel with lentils followed by pan seared foi gras and seared beef tenderloin or Colorado lamb chop and homemade apple cobbler and flourless dark chocolate torte. We loved checking out the artifacts -- six-foot-long wooden skis and the modern handmade skis produced by one of the staff, old-fashioned snowshoes and ski boots -- as we snacked on homemade potato chips, homemade apple and thyme elk sausage and homemade breads I especially loved the rosemary chipotle muffins.

If you are dreaming of seeing a moose during your mountain vacation, you should book a trip to Keystone over the upcoming few weeks.
Fall is one of our favorite seasons in the mountains and not just for the incredible leaf peeping and amazing weather. It is also one of the best times to see moose in the mountains. Fall is the prime mating season for moose and it is when they are most active, mainly in the months of September and October. Moose are most comfortable in cold, damp environments and you can often see them hanging out in marshes or ponds.
These moose were spotted today in West Keystone , near the marshy areas close to the Snake River. If you are lucky enough to spot a moose during your visit to Keystone, please remind that these are wild animals and keep your distance. Moose are very large animals and can often be unpredictable and aggressive and could charge at any time. Enjoy the view, but from a distance. One of the biggest issues most families have is deciding where to stay. Maybe a hotel or a vacation rental? Most families want to stay within budget, so often they just think of a hotel! A vacation rental offers you the luxury of feeling at home while on vacation. When you book a vacation condo, you can have the family in all under one roof, but with each person having their own bedroom, as well as having a full functioning kitchen to cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner and separate living spaces to hang out! The savings you will have on your meals alone is a great reason to choose a vacation rental over a hotel.
Your family will feel much more like a local and enjoy the beauty of Colorado from your balcony, instead of a packed parking lot and cramped living quarters. You can enjoy family game night at the kitchen table or curl up in front of a fireplace as you all settle in for a movie night. Staying at a hotel, you might have to rent a few extra rooms to fit the whole family comfortably, and with that, staying under budget might be hard to accomplish.
A hotel might be ideal if you are planning to stay for one night, since many people like renting a hotel just so they can sleep and continue their journey the next day.
When you stay in a hotel, you have no choice but to go with their schedule for meals, housekeeping, fitness facilities, etc. A hotel is great for a quick trip, but if you want to feel at home, I would recommend you stay in a vacation rental! Especially when you are going on a ski vacation, many of these properties cater to you with ski lockers, heated parking garages and gas fireplaces to warm you up after a day out on the ski slopes.
The choices of vacation rentals at Keystone are endless. We have walk-to-the-slopes condos in the heart of River Run Village , where you can walk to everything from skiing to ice skating to dinner or shopping. Need help deciding?
