So had someone else, apparently. In the back seat, Sophie's eyes were moist. Jenkins softened. One of our detectives will speak to you soon.

Schwartz made his way to a side door that had been propped open, and stepped inside. The immediate area had been lit with emergency lights, but the building, sans hydro, remained very much in the dark. He switched on a flashlight and scanned the room. Other than the prints, there was nothing out of the ordinary, at least not for an abandoned haunted building. At the second floor, he paused, and shone his light down the hallway. He looked up. Lights on the top floor, and muffled voices. Upward he went. Schwartz made his way a few feet down the hall, and saw a body slumped on the floor. Fairly young. Head bloody and swollen. Blood on the hands and clothes. Scratches on his face, hands, arms.
Strangely enough, the victim's clothes were wet. Odd, since a light rain had only begun in the last half hour or so. The wall behind him had been smeared with blood — the victim's, he assumed. Had there been a struggle? If so, with who? He scanned the surrounding area. Footprints, muddy, coming from down the hall, then tracking literally in every direction. This guy was running in circles , he thought.
The kids' shoe prints were also here, which made sense. Unfortunately for them, he could see no other prints. His thoughts were interrupted by a voice. Schwartz was about to give him shit for being here, unauthorized, when he looked up at the random smears.
