Showing Rating details. Sort order. Nov 25, Elisabeth Hallett rated it it was amazing. This is THE essential book for anyone involved with caregiving. It is comprehensive in scope - nothing is left out. Because the author has "been there," her words carry the weight of experience and the glow of real empathy. She doesn't sugarcoat the stressful years of caregiving. She lets you know that your loved one may not respond to your caregiving with love and gratitude.

He or she may be angry and hostile; there may be no emotional reward. Somehow McAdam balances the hard, exhausting realities with a compassion that feels so authentic. There is a wealth of practical advice about the financial and legal ramifications of taking over when the elder can no longer manage, plus checklists on how to recognize increasing need for support and when to step in. If I were back in the situation of dealing with my parents' old age, this is the book I wish I'd had.

Highly recommended!
